Multilateral data sharing and cross-company cooperation promise alternative value creation potential. But how can the digital transformation in mechanical engineering and the entry for small and medium-sized companies succeed?

In our "M-Xperience" dialog series, we want to give you a broad overview of the Manufacturing-X data ecosystem, the results of the MX projects, the underlying technologies and the corresponding requirements for connecting to the data ecosystem for your company.

Our consecutive webinars on the various key topics of Manufacturing-X will give you a deeper insight into the topic of the industrial data economy and provide you with an interesting and practical insight into the respective key topic area through expert presentations.

Service-oriented value creation - Data-driven services and digital business models with Manufacturing-X

Due to digitalization, rising customer expectations, and global competition, companies in the mechanical and plant engineering sector are under pressure to evolve from mere product suppliers into comprehensive, value-driven solution providers.
For the manufacturing industry, production efficiency represents a key business lever. The machine builder plays a central role as a solution provider by orchestrating a tightly networked service network integrated into a data space, in which key component suppliers are involved and machine runtime data is systematically utilized.
Data-driven services and digital business models open up new opportunities for value creation. Initiatives such as Manufacturing-X lay the groundwork for this by enabling secure and standardized data exchange along the entire value chain, thereby strengthening collaboration within industrial ecosystems.

Moderation: Dr.-Ing. Marc Hüske
VDMA e.V., Head of Forum Manufacturing-X, Consortial management of the SCALE-MX project

1. Presentation by Dr.-Ing. Marc Hüske, VDMA e. V.: "From the Physical to the Digital Business Model: The Next Level of Industrial Value Creation"

The presentation explores the concept of service-oriented value creation in an industrial context. It demonstrates how traditional, product-based business models—such as the sale of machinery—can be expanded through additional digital offerings and data-driven services. Using concrete examples, such as the use of tools for order and production planning, the presentation illustrates how companies can strategically expand their service portfolio.

The focus is on the goal of sustainably increasing productivity in industrial manufacturing, optimizing processes across the entire value chain, and developing new, scalable digital business models, particularly for the supplier industry.

2. Presentation by Bastian Brinkmann, Head of Corporate Future Lab, Uhlmann Group Holding SE & Co. KG: “Economic Success in the Data Space – How Can Factory Equipment Suppliers Successfully Tap into the New Business Opportunities Offered by Data-Driven, Service-Oriented Business Models in the Data Ecosystem?”

In his presentation, Bastian Brinkmann addresses the crucial question: How can I, as a factory operator, make money in data ecosystems? In addition to understanding the far-reaching technical and formal characteristics of data ecosystems, industrial companies must above all ask themselves what solutions they want to offer in the data ecosystem in the future, and how the corresponding business model will be designed and implemented. To this end, solution approaches from Factory-X will be presented, enabling companies to tackle this challenging task. In addition to the methodological approach and AI-based application tools for companies, the focus will also be on concrete examples from the project as well as from the Swabian mechanical engineering group Uhlmann.
