Multilateral data sharing and cross-company cooperation promise alternative value creation potential. But how can the digital transformation in mechanical engineering and the entry for small and medium-sized companies succeed?

In our "M-Xperience" dialog series, we want to give you a broad overview of the Manufacturing-X data ecosystem, the results of the MX projects, the underlying technologies and the corresponding requirements for connecting to the data ecosystem for your company.

Our consecutive webinars on the various key topics of Manufacturing-X will give you a deeper insight into the topic of the industrial data economy and provide you with an interesting and practical insight into the respective key topic area through expert presentations.

Collaborative Engineering - Greater Efficiency and Innovation Through Collaborative Engineering with Manufacturing-X

Collaborative engineering is an approach to product development in which various stakeholders—often from different disciplines and across multiple locations—work together to develop a product. The goal is to enhance efficiency, quality, and innovation in the development process through close collaboration. Today, the industry faces growing pressure due to more complex products, increasing sustainability requirements, shorter innovation cycles, and the need for greater efficiency. At the same time, a lack of consistent data availability hinders the implementation of automated processes and collaboration between companies. Initiatives such as Manufacturing-X are therefore developing use cases for digital data ecosystems to enable collaborative engineering. The goal is to improve efficiency, sustainability, and the speed of innovation through secure data exchange along the value chain.

1. Presentation by Tamara Stahl, ZVEI e. V.: "From Sequential to Parallel Engineering: Collaboration in the Data Room with Manufacturing-X"

Why are traditional engineering processes reaching their limits today? And how can we make the transition from sequential handoffs to true parallel collaboration across organizational boundaries? This presentation will describe how collaborative engineering works in the data space and why it is becoming a critical success factor for the industry. You will learn how mechanical, electrical, and software engineering can work simultaneously on a shared, consistent data foundation, eliminating wait times, making integration issues visible early on, and significantly accelerating development cycles. Using concrete use cases from Manufacturing-X, you will see how digital twins and data rooms are reorganizing collaboration between companies: securely, confidently, and scalably.

Tamara Stahl is a business IT specialist with extensive experience in the fields of data economics and industrial AI. Since 2024, she has been working at ZVEI e.V. on the Industrial AI & Data Economy platform and the federal SCALE-MX project. In these roles, she focuses on quality management and collaborative engineering, as well as the transfer of technological developments from the X-projects.

2. Presentation by Dr. Björn Sautter, Senior Expert for Industry 4.0 Ecosystems at Festo SE & Co. KG: “Improved Engineering Performance Through Seamless Data Exchange in the Ecosystem”

In modern mechanical engineering, speed is of the utmost importance. Time-to-market is becoming a decisive factor in international competition. This is where Factory-X comes in with its use case: Collaborative Engineering & Integrated Toolchains.

In his presentation, Dr. Björn Sautter, Factory-X Product Manager and Head of the Manufacturing-X Topic Group for Collaborative Engineering, explains how standardized data models and interfaces within the digital ecosystem can significantly accelerate the complex engineering of machines and thereby enhance a company’s competitiveness.
